PROGRAM NOTE:
Widersprüche was commissioned by the Othmar Schoeck Festival in Brunnen, Switzerland to complete a program of chamber music that included Schoeckʼs Wandersprüche for tenor, clarinet, horn, percussion, and piano. My title obviously echoes Schoeckʼs, but more in sound than in meaning: his “hiking sayings” describe the texts he sets by Joseph Eichendorff, while my “contradictions” reference the disparate natures of the clarinet, horn, and timpani. My musical form, however, is more closely modeled on Schoeckʼs. He calls Wandersprüche a Liederfolge; it comprises a continuous set of short, contrasting musical vignettes that I emulate in my own unfolding explorations of the various musical combinations possible for this peculiarly-scored trio.
